The Marostica Human Chess Game. A memorable story with an air of legend.

It’s now 100 years since the Marostica Human Chess Game was first played, but it remains as thrilling a spectacle as ever, with the age-old flavour of a timeless love story.

2024 EDITION
Once again this year, a number of new features have been introduced to guarantee spectators a fresh, lively experience, with a carefully orchestrated performance able to awaken new emotions. The script is based on an ancient manuscript that tells the story of the fair Lionora and her two suitors, in the days of the Serenissima Republic. The tale is brought to life by over 630 professional performers and volunteers who seek to recreate the splendour of a past that will never return. A panoramic amphitheatre with raised stands hosts the four performances of the chess game, accommodating 3600 spectators in comfortable numbered seats.

The Lower Castle
Mediaeval life
The Lower Castle is an enchanting stone construction built in the 14th century by the Scaligers of Verona to defend the neighbourhood. The design of the exterior embodies the rigour and precision typical of Veronese military architecture, while the interior is characterised by Venetian elegance, featuring frescoed loggias and spacious, finely decorated rooms, all of which can be admired by visitors.

The chemin de ronde
A terrace overlooking the plain

A centuries-old cobbled path crosses the gardens of the Upper Castle and leads up to the Chemin de Ronde on the fourteenth-century castle walls, protected by parapets and merlons. Since 2014, visitors can walk along the chemin de ronde with a safety harness, offering them the opportunity to enjoy unparalleled views over the walled citadel, the Venetian plain, the internal valleys of Marostica and the Vicenza Pre-Alps.
